G8
partners confirm their commitment to Renewable Energy
In the communique published at the end of the recent G8 Summit in
Genoa on 20-22 July 2001,
the Heads of States recommended
the increased use of renewable energy, both in their own countries
and in developing countries, to prevent climate change and to combat
poverty. The preparatory work was undertaken by the Renewable Energy
Task Force, created one year before at the Okinawa Summit. This included
33 representatives from a variety of backgrounds (including both public
and private sectors, industrialized and developing countries, multilateral
and non-governmental organisations). The Heads of States made the
following requests :
- To help developing countries strengthen the capacities of their
own national institutions as well to help them define market strategies
likely to attract private investors,
- To increase the competencies of bilateral and multilateral organisations
for cooperation and development, and to develop innovative financing
arrangements.
They also asked the Global Environmental Facility to promote energy
efficiency and renewable energies while committing themselves to its
replenishment.
The various organisations involved, including ADEME, will join forces
so that the populations of developing countries can benefit from the
energy services required for their economic development, whilst giving
priority to the most efficient renewable solutions.
